DORBA and Raintree Healthcare are proud and excited to present the DORBA 2021 “Judgment for Juniors” challenge!
During the month of July, Juniors will be challenged to ride as many DIFFERENT trails as they can. This will be a tiered challenge. The minimum number of different trails required for formal completion of the challenge will be 8, but Juniors may attempt to ride 12, 20, 32, or even ALL 46 trails for special recognition! Participants will receive a certificate of completion and a finisher’s medal indicative of the number of trails ridden.
This will be a FREE challenge for any Juniors wishing to participate. It will run from Friday July 2nd to Sunday August 1st (trails must be ridden during this period). Juniors are free to select ANY trails from the approved list for their challenge. Parents will submit proof of each trail ride by posting a photo of their child at the trailhead to the DORBA Juniors page after each ride.
This is NOT a mileage challenge! It is a self-paced, non-competitive event. There will be neither a minimum mileage requirement nor designated sections of each trail to be ridden; Juniors will simply be challenged to check out our great DORBA and other local trails, ride as much as they can, be safe, and HAVE FUN. A running tally of Junior rides will be posted, and awards will be mailed out after the Challenge is competed!

2021 DORBA “Judgment for Juniors” RULES & FAQ
1. Who can participate? ANY Junior rider 14 years of age or less.
2. How much does registration cost? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! It’s a FREE challenge for all Juniors 14 and under - sponsored by DORBA and Raintree Healthcare.
3. Are there any other costs? Some of the trails (like Solavaca Ranch or Texas State Parks) do require either an entry fee or a Texas State Park Pass.
4. What gear is required? Juniors are required to provide their own bike, helmet, bike supplies, safety gear, and food/fluids for each ride.
5. What trails are considered eligible for the challenge? Does my Junior have to ride specific trails? This is the list:

There are no specific trails that must be included. Juniors may select ANY 8, 12, 20, 32, or ALL from those listed! The trails do not have to be ridden in any specific order, or on any specific days. You can choose the trail and the day you wish to ride (as long as the trail is open).
6. How will you keep track of which Juniors are riding which trail? Parents must post a picture of their Junior at the trailhead on the DORBA Juniors Facebook page to receive credit for the trail ride. DON’T FORGET THE PICTURE, PLEASE – it is the only proof needed for each ride, but it is REQUIRED. NO PHOTO, NO RIDE CREDIT. Group pictures are acceptable for siblings riding together!
7. How much/how many miles of each trail must be ridden? This is open to the “judgment” of parents and Juniors. We are NOT requiring a minimum mileage for any trail. Children vary in their ability. Parents are to evaluate that ability, then encourage the Juniors to ride as much as they can, WHILE HAVING FUN at each trail. One hour might be a good target time for the younger kids; older Juniors may ride much more. The duration of each ride will also depend on trail difficulty, conditions, and factors such as temperature and humidity. Please monitor the hydration and energy level of your child when riding in the heat. BE SAFE.
8.What sections of each trail must be ridden? Again, this is open to the “judgment” of the parents and Juniors. All of the trails have segments that are easy, segments that are harder, and sections that are very difficult. Parents should select the sections of trail best suited to the skill level of their Junior. If you are not familiar with a trail, please - ASK! The DORBA trail stewards, website, website forum, DORBA Facebook page, and DORBA Juniors Facebook page are chock full of helpful advice when you need to learn about a trail. Friendly folks will be happy to suggest which trails and sections may be appropriate for the skill and age of your child.
9. What if there are trail closures due to bad weather? We are hoping for good weather, but it is Texas. Remember that eligible rides are on OPEN trails only - do not ride muddy or closed trails! If there are scattered, brief trail closures due to rain, the challenge will proceed. Juniors should simply look for open trails to ride and then repeatedly pester parents to take them there. If there are widespread or persistent trail closures, the Challenge may be extended or postponed to allow extra time for Juniors to complete their rides. This will be at my discretion.
10. How will you keep people from “cheating?” In short - we can’t. The challenge is based on the honor system. There’s nothing to prevent a parent from driving their kids around, taking pictures at different trailheads without having them actually ride any trails. But why would anyone do that? And who really wants a medal they didn’t earn?
11. Will you have organized or chaperoned rides for the Juniors? NO. All of the trails rides will be done solely by the Juniors and their parents. Neither DORBA nor Raintree Healthcare will be hosting rides at specific trails. However, Junior rides done as part of another event DO count! For example, if you are doing DORBA Judgment Day and your Junior rides trails with you, those rides MAY count towards their challenge total.
12. Who is responsible for the safety of myself and my Junior while riding? YOU ARE. DORBA and Raintree Healthcare do not and will not assume responsibility for any of the Junior riders, on any trail, at any point during the course of the challenge. As a parent, it is YOUR responsibility to assess your Junior’s condition & skill, and their ability to ride the trail. YOU must make sure that your Junior is properly equipped with a working bike, helmet, and other appropriate safety gear. YOU must make sure they are able to ride safely, and negotiate trail features & obstacles, or walk their bike past them. YOU must make sure that your Junior is properly hydrated, and has access to water and food before, during, and after rides. Please carry a cell phone at all times and make sure that someone knows you are on the trail and when you are expected to return.
13. When should we ride the trails? During the heat of the summer, early morning and evening rides are advisable. At all times, be conscious of your Junior’s hydration and energy level. Remember to be conscious of your own health as well.
14. How/when do I submit proof of each ride? Where will a running tally be displayed? Simply post a photo of your Junior(s) at the trailhead on the DORBA Juniors Facebook page after each ride. I’ll keep a running tally of the Juniors and their trail rides there as well. ALL RIDE CLAIMS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY MIDNIGHT ON THE LAST DAY OF THE CHALLENGE (August 2nd).
15. What awards will be given out? When will that happen? All Juniors who ride at least 8 different trails and post a trailhead photo as required will be awarded a Certificate of Completion. In addition, Juniors completing 8, 12, 20, 32, or ALL trails will receive a custom bronze, silver, gold, platinum, or diamond medal respectively. Awards will be mailed out after the Challenge is completed.
